What is a chartered accountant?
A chartered accountant is a qualified professional who’s completed rigorous training and exams through a recognised body. They’re held to high standards, both ethically and professionally, which means you get expert advice. Syers McGill is a chartered accountancy firm registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
What do accountants do?
An accountant helps individuals and businesses manage their accounts, including bookkeeping, preparing accounts, filing tax returns and offering advice to save money and stay compliant with HMRC. A good accountant will help you understand the numbers, make good decisions and plan for the future.
Are bookkeepers, auditors and accountants the same?
No. They all deal with money, but in different ways. Bookkeepers record day-to-day transactions, accountants use that info to prepare accounts and offer advice, and auditors check that everything’s accurate and compliant. At Syers McGill, we offer bookkeeping as well as accounting services.

Which director will work on my account?
If you’re a personal tax client, a sole trader or a partnership, Michaela McGill will be your contact. For limited companies, you’ll work with either Dan or Dave Syers. Each director is supported by our wider accounting and bookkeeping teams. Get to know them over on our meet the team page.
Are accountants expensive?
If needed, we’ll get in touch with your previous accountant to request professional clearance. We’ll also send our engagement letter and ask for ID documentation, as required by our regulatory body.

We can! We offer full bookkeeping, VAT returns, payroll and more. You can leave it all to us or we can help where you need it.
